13 June 2021 Karara Phase 2 iron ore mine Report summary Karara Phase 2 involves expanding concentrate production at Karara Mining to 16 Mtpa (Phase 1 capacity is 8Mtpa) in the Midwest region of Western Australia. The mine is located 200 kilometres east of Geraldton and is a joint venture between China's Ansteel and ASX listed Gindalbie.

The Karara iron ore project is already the largest of its kind in the Midwest region and one of only two magnetite mines in Western Australia. Located 220 kilometres south-east of Geraldton, Karara Mining has been exporting 8Mtpa of premium, high-grade (66.68 per cent) magnetite concentrate to offtake partner Ansteel in China.

Subject to reaching agreement with Karara, the anticipated value of the contract is around A$702 million ($529 million) over a five-year duration with a project workforce averaging circa-250 personnel. MACA, through its recently acquired Mining West business, currently holds the contract mining agreement at Karara.

NRW is set to win a mining services contract worth around AUD702m ($526.84m) from Karara Mining for the Karara Iron Ore mine in Western Australia. The company has been issued a letter of intent (LoI) in this regard for the five-year contract, which would involve the deployment of 250 personnel from NRW.

The Karara facility operates a 35,000 tpd capacity stacker and conveyor system to develop a tailings dry stack landform. Key issues such as stability of the tailings mass and stacker foundation, storage capacity, landform development and closure considerations were considered during the design phase and permitting.

NRW has been awarded the mining, train loading and miscellaneous services contract with Karara Mining Ltd. The Karara mine site is located 320 kilometres north-east of Perth and 225 kilometres east of Geraldton, in the Shire of Perenjori, Western Australia. The Karara iron ore project is the largest mining operation in the Mid-West Region.

Karara was built at the peak of the mining boom, which resulted in its original $1.6 billion budget blowing out by more than $1 billion. The iron ore price collapsed during a longer than expected ramp-up of Karara and high operating costs above $US100/t meant further debt had accumulated just to keep the project alive over the past six years.

Karara DSO was a small scale, direct shipping ore (DSO) operation conducted by Karara Mining Limited; a 48/52 joint venture between Gindalbie Metals, an Australian mining company and Chinese steelmaker Anshan Iron and Steel (AnSteel). The initial DSO reserves are depleted with final tonnage extracted in December 2015.
