DUSHANBE -- Tajikistan, as it seeks foreign partners to help mine its mineral riches, has learned one lesson: beware of China. China owns half of Tajikistan's almost $3.2 billion foreign debt, according to the Central Asian Bureau for Analytical Reporting (CABAR), giving Beijing intimidating leverage over Dushanbe.


Tajikistan's largest gold mining operation is located in Sughd Province, with most gold being mined southeast of Gharm, in the Pamir Mountains, in the Yakhsu Valley, Chkalovsk, and Jilau.[7] It has taken off since independence from Russia with 2,700 kilograms (6,000 lb) of gold mined in 2000 compared to 1,100 in 1996.[7]


The production got a sudden boost from the First World War but went through a slump in the early thirties. The production reached a level of 29 mts. by 1942 and 30 mts. by 1946. With the advent of Independence, the country embarked upon the 5-year development plans. At the beginning of the 1st Plan, annual production went upto 33 mts.


The coal has been a major contributor to the economy of Tajikistan. In recent years, the production of hard coal has seen an increase to 31,200 tons while brown coal has increased to 15,200 tons. Foreign investment comes from several countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Hungary, Germany, and other countries.
